Jazz
The blending of instrumental ragtime and vocal blues created jazz in the early 20th century. Beginning in New Orleans, it quickly spread to Memphis and New York City. Louis Armstrong and the Creole Jazz Band became well known for their jazz music. He was the most influential musician in the history of jazz. Jazz was also the most popular music to dance to.
Writers
Sinclair Lewis was the first American to win a Noble Prize in literature. Many of the writers during this time tackled prime issues. Willa Cather and Edna St. Vincent Millay both had differing views in their writing. Cather wrote about the lives of normal immigrant farmers while Millay wrote about the youth and liberating from traditional constraints.
