Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)
Hemingway was the best known expatriate author in the 20's. Many of his works are considered to be classics of American literature. His wartime experience in World War I inspired and motivated him to write The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms. These novels discourage the glorification of war.
Duke Ellington (1899-1974)
Largely self-taught, Ellington was one of the greatest composers during his time. His first song was "Soda Fountain Rage", and the age of 15. When he was 22 he began his first band. The Duke Ellington Orchestra reached nationwide audiences through the use of the radio. He also gained national recognition through his appearances at the Cotton club. He helped people view jazz as an art form uniform to other traditional music genres. After his death his reputation further increased.
