Early pop culture influenced the way many Americans spent their pastime.
Fads
During this time many women bobbed their hair to keep up with the fashion. The Charleston was the most popular dance during this time. This dance involved wild, flailing movements of the arms and legs as well as appropriate clothing for women.
Pop Heroes
Americans became inspired by sports heroes in this decade. Now, they especially loved to see under dogs prevail after difficult odds. In 1926 Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel. Babe Ruth, New York Yankees slugger, hit 60 home runs in 1927. Andrew Foster, The Father of Black Baseball, founded the Negro National League. All of these sports heroes inspired many ordinary Americans to improve and change their lives.
